Monocouche vs silicone render: which should you choose?

Monocouche costs £45–£65 per m² and suits sound brick or blockwork; silicone costs £60–£75 per m² and adds a self-cleaning, crack-resistant finish in 1,000+ colours. Choose monocouche for value and speed (3–4 days on a semi), silicone for exposed elevations, light colours and the longest warranties.
The two systems in one minute
Monocouche is a single through-coloured coat, 10–20mm, machine-sprayed and scratched back — fast, robust and never repainted. Silicone is a thin-coat system: reinforced basecoat plus a 1.5mm hydrophobic silicone finish — flexible, self-cleaning and available in vastly more colours.
Choose monocouche when…
Your walls are sound brick or block, you want the work done in days not weeks, the budget matters (£50–£65 per m² vs £60–£75), and a classic scratched or ashlar-cut finish suits the house. Manufacturer warranties apply.
Choose silicone when…
The elevation faces driving weather, you want a light colour to stay light (the topcoat sheds dirt with rain), the substrate has hairline-crack history (the mesh layer bridges movement), or you want a specific colour — silicone palettes exceed a thousand options.

We check the substrate, exposure and detailing before recommending either — and on many homes the answer is both: monocouche on sheltered elevations, silicone on the weather face. That hybrid approach is only possible with a contractor approved across both systems.

Silicone costs roughly 25–35% more than monocouche supply-and-fit — £60–£75 per m² against £50–£65. The premium reflects two extra coats (base coat, mesh and finish), a far wider colour range and a longer expected lifespan with no repaint cycle.
Monocouche is through-coloured — the pigment runs through the full 10–20mm thickness, so it never needs painting and scratches don't show a different colour underneath. Standard palettes from PRB, K Rend and Weber offer around 20–30 shades, from brilliant white to sandstone and grey.
Silicone systems offer well over a thousand colour options — far beyond the smaller monocouche palette. The polymer topcoat is colour-stable and hydrophobic: rain beads off and carries surface dirt with it, keeping the finish clean for decades.
A properly specified system lasts for decades with no maintenance other than occasional pressure washing. Manufacturer warranties are provided on the manufacturer's own terms. The most common cause of premature failure is DIY application under 10mm thick.
